Taking Care of Yourself While Viewing Recent Media

Staying informed about what is happening in the world can feel like a lot. News isn’t just something that comes on at ten o’clock anymore; it’s constant. Social media provides updates, opinions, and speculation all day long, and honestly, it can get overwhelming fast.

Even just reading headlines can take a toll. Stories about abuse, exploitation, and corruption can bring up anger, anxiety, or just a heavy, drained feeling. You might notice your heart racing, your jaw tightening, or that sense of dread creeping in while you scroll. That’s your nervous system reacting, and it makes sense. Nothing is wrong with you for feeling that way.

There’s this quiet pressure to stay on top of everything, like we are supposed to know everything that is happening. But the truth is, you don’t need to consume every update to be informed. It’s okay to set limits. Maybe that looks like putting a timer on your news intake or just staying out of the comment sections altogether.

It also helps to balance things out. If you’ve been taking in a lot of heavy content, give your mind and body a break. Step outside for a bit, especially if the weathers nice. Even a ten-minute walk around the block can help. Put on music you love, call someone who feels safe to talk to, or just take a few slow, deep breaths.

The intensity of online can make it feel like you always need to be paying attention. But you’re one person. You can care about what’s happening without absorbing all of it. Taking a break doesn’t mean you don’t care. It just means you’re taking care of yourself.

So, if you need to, step back. Log off. Take a breath. Come back to what’s right in front of you.
